Robotics Should Take on Risk So Operators Don't Have To

Exploring the principles that shape PDW's approach to modern warfare

There is an old saying in the military: Mission first. People always. 


Those priorities have never been at odds. Mission success depends on the people who execute it, and every commander understands that preserving combat power is part of accomplishing the mission. 


Today, advances in autonomy are changing how that principle is applied. Across modern battlefields, robotics are giving commanders new ways to protect soldiers from unnecessary exposure while expanding their tactical options. 


At PDW, that idea has become one of our core beliefs: 


Robotics should take on risk so operators don't have to.


A shift in how commanders think 


For generations, some tasks simply belonged to the first soldier through the breach, the lead vehicle entering contested terrain, or the reconnaissance team moving into the unknown. They accepted those risks because there was no practical alternative. 


Increasingly, there is. 


During a summer Joint Readiness Training Center rotation, the 101st Airborne Division tested a concept that used attack drones and unmanned ground vehicles to support breaching operations before soldiers advanced. Those systems were used to destroy fighting positions, reduce obstacles, trigger enemy fires, and create conditions for the assault force to move with greater freedom of action. As brigade commander Col. Ryan Bell described it, the objective was to put "steel" between soldiers and the breach. 


That is more than a demonstration of new technology. It reflects a broader shift in doctrine: use autonomous systems where they can absorb risk first, allowing operators to focus on the decisions and actions that only people can perform. 


A few days later, soldiers with the Oregon National Guard demonstrated the same principle in a different mission set, using a heavy-lift drone to deliver a Bangalore torpedo across a wire obstacle instead of asking engineers to carry it forward under direct threat. The technology was different. The thinking was the same. 


The measure of autonomy isn’t complexity 


There is no shortage of discussion about artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and the future of warfare. It's easy to become distracted by the technology itself. 


Operators don't judge capability that way.  


Mission-capable drones create value that has very little to do with algorithms and everything to do with giving commanders better options and protecting the force. 


The recent Army exercises reflected that perspective. While soldiers experimented with AI-enabled planning tools, leaders were equally clear that tactical judgment remains a human responsibility. Technology can accelerate decisions and reduce unnecessary risk, but it does not replace the experience required to make those decisions in the first place. 


That distinction matters. The objective isn't autonomous warfare, it's better warfighting. 


Preserving combat power 


One of the more interesting observations from the 101st exercise wasn't about autonomy at all. It was about scale. 


The brigade relied heavily on low-cost attack drones, many assembled by soldiers using approved components, because commanders recognized that these systems needed to be available in meaningful numbers. They weren't treated as scarce assets reserved for exceptional circumstances. They were another tool available to the force, much like ammunition or engineer equipment, intended to solve a tactical problem. 


That reflects an important reality of modern conflict. Some systems will be expendable by design. Their purpose is to enter contested spaces before people do, gathering information, delivering effects, or drawing enemy attention so operators don't have to accept that risk themselves. 


The platform may be replaceable. The operator is not.

At PDW, our mission is to deliver decisive airpower into the hands of every operator. 


That mission isn't defined by aircraft. It is defined by the people who carry them into the field and the commanders responsible for employing them. Every capability we build should answer a straightforward question: does it help operators accomplish the mission, better protect the people carrying it out, and preserve the combat power needed for the next one? 


Modern warfare will always involve risk. No technology changes that. But when robotics can assume the most dangerous parts of a mission before an operator has to, commanders gain another option. Increasingly, that option isn't simply an advantage. It's becoming an expectation. 


That's what we believe.
